From humble beginnings in a small weatherboard clinic on Princess Street to the purpose-built veterinary hospital we call home today, East Bundaberg Veterinary Hospital has been part of the local community for decades. While our practice has grown and veterinary medicine has evolved, our commitment to trusted, compassionate care has remained at the heart of everything we do.
East Bundaberg Veterinary Hospital began in a small weatherboard house at 71 Princess Street, where Dr Peter Gardner established a mixed animal practice caring for livestock, family pets and birds.
Dr David Challen joined Dr Peter Gardner as a partner, beginning an important new chapter for the practice. Together, they also operated a veterinary surgery in Bargara to care for the growing coastal community.
The practice moved into Bundaberg’s first purpose-built animal hospital, constructed by Owen Halter. The innovative facility was also Bundaberg’s first tilt-panel building and remains our home today.
Dr Peter Gardner became a registered veterinary chiropractor — the first and only veterinarian with this registration in Bundaberg at the time — adding another area of specialised knowledge to the practice.
Dr David Challen purchased Dr Peter Gardner’s share of the practice and became the sole owner of East Bundaberg Veterinary Hospital, continuing to build upon the strong foundations they had established together.
After many years as a mixed animal practice, East Bundaberg Veterinary Hospital transitioned its primary focus to small animal and avian care, shaping the hospital we know today.
Drs Leroy and Bridgette Gambanga purchased East Bundaberg Veterinary Hospital and Bargara Veterinary Surgery from Dr David Challen, beginning the next chapter in the practices’ long history.
Today, Leroy, Bridgette and the team continue the legacy of those who came before them, combining decades of local history with modern veterinary medicine, diagnostics, surgery, preventative healthcare and compassionate patient care.
